What is OneRef?

OneRef is the fast, safe and streamlined way to complete medical references for your colleagues, created by the team at Messly.

Who is Messly?

Messly is a service which helps doctors find locum work.

Doctors create an anonymous profile on Messly with their desired locum work, which is shared with a selection of the best locum agencies in the UK. Doctors receive offers from these agencies, and then select who they want to register and work with.

We support doctors in learning about their locum options, choosing the best agencies for them, and with agency registration.

Launched in 2020, we've helped over 15,000 locum doctors find work quickly and easily.

Why are you doing this?

Referees told us that providing references for current or former colleagues is a time-intensive, paperwork-heavy and frustrating process. It's especially frustrating when the same colleague needs multiple references for the different agencies they want to register with.

Locum doctors told us that these issues often result in delays starting work, or missing out on locum work altogether.

OneRef aims to simplify the referencing process, saving you valuable time, reducing paperwork, and ensuring the secure, efficient sharing of references with agencies on Messly.

We are dedicated to providing a service that is straightforward, secure, and easy-to-use for all medical professionals.

How does it work?

You will receive a reference request from a colleague through OneRef. You quickly create an account, and then you can digitally complete and sign the reference from your phone or computer. You can then share that reference with multiple agencies directly from OneRef.

We also give you a simple dashboard to keep track of your pending reference requests. If you get regularly asked to provide references, this will help you stay organised.

How does this save me time?

Firstly, you only need to complete the reference form once for each colleague. Currently each locum agency has their own form and you need to complete each separately, but with OneRef that only happens once.

Secondly, we have digitised the whole process. Agencies will typically send a document to be printed, completed and signed in pen, then scanned and emailed back to them. With OneRef, you complete the information online (much of which we pre-populate), then sign and send digitally.

We've tested this out, and it turns a 10-15 minute task into a 2 minute task for you.

Which agencies are part of OneRef?

All of the locum agencies which use Messly to contact locum doctors are using the OneRef service. This includes 25 of the largest and most well-known locum agencies in the UK.

Other agencies will still request references using the current paper and email based method.

Will agencies still contact me?

Agencies using OneRef have no need to contact you directly.

How do I complete and e-sign a reference form on OneRef?

We will lead you through a series of steps to complete the reference digitally. This includes confirming the doctor's employment information and giving feedback on areas of their performance.

We will auto-complete as much of this as possible to save you time.

You will then be taken to an e-signing page, which uses a well-known and secure electronic signature provider, where you can sign the reference digitally.

The last step is to review the final document, before this is saved to your OneRef dashboard.

How do I share a reference with an organisation through OneRef?

Locum agencies will ask for a copy of a reference created through OneRef.

To share a reference, visit the 'Share Requests' section on the home page. There, you will see a list of requests that have been made for a reference.

Click 'Approve' to approve a request. An email with a reference, plus an auto-generated cover letter will be sent to the locum agency, with you copied in for your records.

For audit purposes, you'll need to reply to this email to confirm that the reference originated from you.

Can I edit a reference after it's been completed and signed?

Yes, you can. You can click 'Edit' next to a reference to change its details. However, after making changes, you'll need to re-sign the reference form.

How can I track the references I've provided?

You can view a list of all the references you've requested and completed under the 'References' section on your OneRef dashboard.

How secure is my information on OneRef?

Your information is stored securely in accordance with GDPR and is not shared with any third-party services.

Can I use OneRef for multiple references for the same doctor?

Yes, you can. Once you've completed a reference, this can be used for any locum agency who requests it. We'll generate a new version of the reference form for each organisation that requests it, and ask you to share this with them.

How does OneRef ensure the confidentiality of the references I provide?

OneRef only shares your references with the requested parties. The information is not publicly available, and you can request to delete it at any time.

Can I retract a reference once I've shared it with an organisation?

Yes, you can. If you need to retract a reference, please contact us via Live chat to request this.

What happens if I forget my OneRef login details?

If you forget your login details, simply click on 'Forgot Password' on the login page to reset them.

How can I provide feedback about the OneRef platform?

You can provide feedback about the OneRef platform using our live chat or by calling us at +44 020 4525 5373.

What support is available if I encounter issues using OneRef?
