What is Instant Pay?

Instant Pay is a service that enables you to get paid on the same day for locum shifts that you complete through Messly.

Why are you offering Instant Pay? 

The almost unanimous feedback we’ve had from doctors is that they want to be paid faster. Hospitals can take up to 3 months to pay doctors for locum shifts. We think thats wrong. So, we're offering Instant Pay on certain shifts to enable you to get paid on the same day as you complete the shift.

Do I need to register for Instant Pay?

Yes, you need to activate this as a separate feature on your account. We will collect your bank details for payment, and set up the direct debit which we use to collect payment back from you. You'll also need to be registered with the Trust staff bank.

Why don’t you get the hospitals to pay us faster?

We're working on it! Hospital payroll systems are notoriously complex, and it's a lengthy process to arrange for any changes in payment terms with the Trust. We didn’t want to just accept that, so we the Instant Pay system exists to enable you to get paid on the same day as your shift.

How do I know which shifts are available for Instant Pay?

Look out for the Instant Pay symbol (⚡) next to the shift when searching for shifts on Messly. We will also confirm that this is a Instant Pay shift in the email we send you after you have applied for the shift.

What if I don’t want to use Instant Pay?

That’s fine. Before you accept an eligible shift, we will ask you whether you want to use the Instant Pay service - if you don't, you don't need to worry about it.

Why aren’t all shifts Instant Pay?

We are currently trialling the service on selected shifts only. If the feedback is positive, we hope to continue the service and broaden the offer to cover all shifts in all departments that use Messly.

Are shifts which aren’t posted on Messly included in Instant Pay?

No. So if you are working in another department and are fed up of waiting to get paid, let us know and we will contact them to see if they are interested in working with Messly to make your life easier.


How much do you pay us?

We'll pay you an estimate of the amount that you will receive through the hospital payroll - net of the tax that the hospital usually deducts from your pay as PAYE. This is why we ask you for a copy of a recent payslip when you register for Instant Pay.

It doesn’t matter if the estimate isn't exactly right, or if the amount for the shift has been included within your monthly payslip, as you will repay us the exact same amount as we paid to you - rather than the amount that you are eventually paid by the hospital.

Do I need to submit a timesheet?

Yes - you just need to email us a photo of your signed Trust timesheet after you've completed your shift. Please note you still need to submit your timesheet to the department in the usual way.

What if I work extra hours on my shift?

You record these extra hours on your timesheet, and we will include these hours. If you don't know whether or not you'll be paid for these additional hours by the hospital, then we will ask you to wait until that is agreed before submitting the timesheet to us.

When will I receive my Instant Pay?

We transfer the money to your bank account on the same day as you start your shift. We notify you that the payment has been made, and you will receive it within 1 or 2 working days. You will see it come up on your bank statement as MESSLY and the shift code.

How will I receive the money?

We'll make the payment to you by bank transfer to your nominated bank account. We will collect these details from you when you register for Fast Pay.


Why do I need to repay Messly?

You will still receive your normal payment from the hospital payroll usually within 4-8 weeks. So, you ACTUALLY get paid twice for the same shift - once immediately by Messly and again by the hospital much later on. It's after you have received the second payment from the hospital that you repay the first to Messly, meaning we're square. 

If that sounds like a round-about way to do it….we agree! Arranging for the hospital to pay us directly is lengthy and complex, so we're using this workaround to ensure that you can have your money in your account as quickly as possible.

When do you collect repayment from me?

We only take repayment from you once you are paid by the hospital. We will send you a notification before we intend to take the payment, so you know exactly when it will happen.

We confirm with the Trust staff bank when payment has been authorised to be paid to prevent repayments being taken before the money is in your account. If you have any reason to believe the hospital will delay paying you, you can also just let us know and we hold off until you have the money in your account from the hospital.

How do you collect repayment from me?

We do this by direct debit, using the GoCardless system. We will ask you to set this up when you register for Instant Pay.

What if the hospital don’t pay me or payment is late from the hospital?

If the hospital delays paying you, you can just let us know and we hold off until they've paid you.

What if I don’t have enough money in my account when you take payment from me?

We will contact you to let you know what has happened, and attempt to take the payment again in a few days.

Do I still need to register with the Trust Staff Bank?

Yes, you need to be registered with the Trust staff bank to use Messly Instant Pay. The Trust are still responsible for verifying your status as a doctor and you will still receive payment from the Trust for your shifts.


Do you charge for Instant Pay?

As doctors we think it’s only fair that you get paid on-time for the work you’ve done, at any hospital across the NHS. 

Instead of charging fees and interest, we ask for an optional ‘tip’ for each Instant Pay shift you claim. This tip enables us to keep the Instant Pay service running across all your departments covering the some of administering the service and same-day payments for you and other Messly doctors, so you can get paid on time as you deserve to. 

The tip we ask for is £5/ per shift, capped at £15 per transaction. If you like what we’re doing we’d be grateful for your support, but there is always an option to pay £0.


Will this affect my credit rating?

No, assuming that we can collect repayment from you and adhere to the direct debit agreement. Because there is no interest charged, Instant Pay falls outside of the consumer credit regime.

Where do you get the money from?

We use Messly’s own money to make payments to you. There are no banks, credit agencies or loan providers involved - so you don’t need to worry about unexpected charges or the money being taken back early.

Does it affect my tax or employment status?

No. As you continue to be paid as normal by the hospital, Instant Pay does not change your tax or employment status. It's a separate transaction between us. You don’t need to worry about any unexpected surprises when you do your tax return.

Does this make you an agency?

No. We're proud to not be an agency.
